Jac and I headed out Wednesday at about noon for our roadtrip that ultimately winds us up in Georgia to visit with mama and grandma.
Here was our plan, leave Wednesday morning, have lunch with Aunt Terri in South Jersey. Then head out and have dinner and stay with Meg & Mike (remember that they just got married in December?). Thursday morning, we'd head on our way and end in Georgia.
Jac and I have driven this stretch often. A lot together. Sometimes with friends. And Jac and I have often traveled the road individually. It's a bad drive for anyone that thinks commuting sucks. For us, it's fifteen fun-filled hours of singing along (soft, sad&delicate or loud&out of key) to music we love, {my personal favorite is our rendition of Kelly Clarkson's ''since you've been gone''} rockstar energy drinks, beef jerky, lots of pictures, spontaneous dancing in your seat, conversations on life, love, heartache, and hopes & dreams. Mostly though, they all eventually wind up in giggle fits.
This brings me to Murphys Law. (Damn you and your laws, sir) 'Anything that can go wrong, will, at the worst possible time.'
Well, if we cared about seeing the signs, this trip was clearly not meant to happen today. Delay after delay kept us from actually leaving town until nearly 230pm. But we pushed on, knowing that this particular trip couldn't have come at a better time.
And by that, I mean to explain...
This past Friday afternoon, my grandma fell over her walker and broke her arm. You know, the funny bone part... Not funny at all apparently. Due to her current condition & age, there isn't much that the doctors can offer. Right now all they can safely recommend is to put a stabilization brace on and hope for the best. Mama needs some help taking extra care of her and probably needs a good hug. Grandma is easily cheered up by our phone calls, but this is sure to pick her spirits up. After everything that my dear sweet mama has done for me in the last 26 years, I'm more than happy to do all I can and then some.
And as if that's not enough, this morning, we got news from Mike that he's deploying to help with the disaster relief in Haiti. Mike is part of the Military Police with the U.S. Army currently stationed at Fort Bragg. This is big news for all of us, first because Mike is a new cousin (by marrying sweet Meg) of less than one month. He was given notice today and they are slated
to leave early next week. As of now, for a six-month tour. To say the least, it's devastating news to a new wife that has just started out her new life by moving away from her family and friends to be with her Michael. Hopefully, we can be there for her as a small distraction and a quiet getaway once Mike is off to save the world.
And so, we travel. Currently, at milemarker 30 on I-95 south in Virginia. It's a long road, but well traveled and happily so with my dear sweet family in mind. Its a beautiful dark sky over our path with the stars shining brightly and they remind me to breathe. While I breathe, I hope.
Found this in my fortune cookie a couple of days ago... Made me laugh aloud. It's only thirteen days into the new year.

This will be okay. There isn't anything I can't handle with family & friends like you.

You're right, there's nothing you can't handle.
Murphy's Law forgets to say that whatever goes wrong...it's always in your control to fix it.
